The accused, Eddie McGuin, 47, was remanded in custody to appear in court by video from jail Thursday at 9 a.m. McGuin, who was wearing a parka and at times wiping his eyes with a tissue, is charged in the death of Rick MacLeod, 49, also of Acton, following an altercation in a Mill St. W., Acton apartment. McGuin was arrested at the scene. Sgt. Brian Carr of Halton Regional Police said the two men were known to each other and police are still investigating to determine how well they knew each other and what led to the altercation. "We don't believe there was a weapon involved," said Carr. Carr also said the cause of TUESDAY, January 11, 2011 Acton man facing second-degree murder charge MacLeod's death is still under investigation. "There was an altercation, but we can't say the altercation led to his death," said Carr. Halton Police Sgt. Dave Cross said Monday a postmortem began Friday and the "process is ongoing." He said results were not expected Monday or today (Tuesday), and it was unknown if the results would be released when the post mortem is complete. Police and paramedics were called to the 21 Mill St. W. apartment about 7:25 p.m. Thursday because a man was suffering from life-threatening injuries. MacLeod was pronounced dead a short time after police and paramedics arrived. MacLeod's slaying is the first murder in Halton Hills since April 2005 when Rene Leon Paulin, 44, was charged with second degree murder after Hanzel Honeywell 45, was stabbed at a Maria St., Acton home. Paulin later died in prison.
