Youths help out their friends By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Twelve-year-old Rachel Vander Doelen has known Thomas Newman, 12, Joshua Newman, 10, and James Newman, 7, their entire lives. So when tragedy struck the Newman family in Oakville a few weeks ago, leaving Thomas, Joshua and James orphaned, she wanted to do something to help them out. Vander Doelen, her mother, Jennifer, and her friends, Madison Donohoe and Emilia Paolone, baked 150 cupcakes and sold them to friends and family to raise money for the youths' trust fund. At a cost of $2 for one, or $10 for half a dozen, the cupcakes went fast, raising $320. "I just love baking cupcakes and I wanted to help them," Vander Doelen said. She let her customers choose between chocolate and vanilla cupcakes with a choice of chocolate, vanilla or raspberry icing. Chocolate cupcakes with vanilla icing were the most popular, according to Vander Doelen. This is the first time she made as many as 150 cupcakes. Making so many wasn't difficult, she said, but it took more time. Speaking before she delivered the goodies, she was confident they would be well liked. "I bake cupcakes for my birthday parties and everyone seems to like them," she said. "I think it's a really compassionate thing for her to do," said Jennifer. "She's very fond of the Newman boys and just wants to support them." Vander Doelen goes to school with the boys and has known them her whole life as family friends. The three boys' mother, Katherine, was stabbed to death in her Treetop Terrace home on Jan. 11. Their father, Kyle, was shot and killed by police in the parking lot of 20 Division police station in Oakville a few minutes away from Katherine's home that same day. Police still have not yet officially linked the two incidents. A trust account for the boys is set up at the Bank of Montreal, account number 0006 398 6401; donations can also be made online at www.
