www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, February 1, 2012 · 8 New Oakville Family Ribfest will take the spotlight June 22-24 The first official weekend of the summer is promising to be fingerlicking good because Oakville is getting a ribfest. The Oakville Family Ribfest was announced Tuesday morning and it will take place the weekend of June 22-24 on the grounds of Sheridan College. The event is put on by the Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar. "We want to return summer festivals to Oakville," said Rotarian Ken Coulter at the announcement location outside the Oakville campus. "There will be bands and family entertainment." And, of course, there will be delicious ribs. Trish Peden, ribfest chair, said there will be up to eight ribbers at the inaugural event. Aside from the ribbers, there will also be local crafters and vendors. "We're trying to make it as much Oakville as we can," she said. Admission into the ribfest will be free, but donations will be collected. Funds raised at the event will go to the Rotary Club, most of which will be diverted towards the new Oakville hospital campaign. The three-day event will combine food with live family-oriented entertainment and a market square with artisans. Sheridan College quickly got involved with the event. "We're hoping to be able to showcase some of the things that happen here at Sheridan. We'll be inviting people in as well, as they enjoy the ribs," said Sheridan College president Jeff Zabudsky. "It's a great way for us to be increasing our engagement with the community." Zabudsky also praised the work of the Rotary Club. "I can't imagine a better organization to be involved with than Rotary," he said. "The Rotary cares deeply about the community and Sheridan wants to support Rotary in its efforts to create a healthier and a more vibrant community." Budds' Group is the platinum sponsor of the event. Darryl Budd was on hand to make the announcement. "(Budds) is a family organization and we consider Oakville to be part of the family because all our stores are in Oakville," he said. "It was a perfect addition to us again to help sponsor Rotary, which is a wonderful charity worldwide and to be part of the community." The event has already garnered endorsements from Mayor Rob Burton, MPP Kevin Flynn and Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. A website was also launched to promote the event.
