Zabudsky thanked Mayor Rob Burton for supporting the campaign. Burton helped launch the initiative in September at an event that saw a bus hauled by various teams at the new Oakville Transit facility. "We pulled a bus to demonstrate that when we work together, we can move mountains or buses and the mayor was there to help us ... He just loved pulling those buses and he helped me," said Zabudsky. The funds will be used to support more than 30 social service agencies that assist residents in need. The campaign goal was based on need and numbers previously recorded. Some of the agencies funded by UWO include the Halton Trauma Centre, Community Living Oakville, CNIB, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Halton, Oakville Distress Centre, St. John Ambulance, and Oakville Parent-Child Centre, among others. "It has been a very busy year, but I think this is a very apt way to truly celebrate the achievements of Jeff's campaign and certainly the hard work of all the donors involved and the staff," said Tim Johnston, UWO board $75,000 for the campaign, raising more than $81,000 through schoolwide initiatives in November. More than 30 per cent of the goal was attained on the first day. Some student-led activities included popcorn and cotton candy sales, manicures, hand massages, tarot card readings and caricature drawings. For its efforts, the college was awarded the Leadership Giving Campaign of the Year and Best Campaign awards. "This is a campaign that got outstanding support from the president and CEO to set the campaign off to a very successful start. Their threshold moved from $60,000 in 2010 to $75,000 in 2011," said Johnston. "This campaign was exceptionally well executed through a committee of 22 members representing all departments and faculty. They had 15 leaders and more than 100 donors giving more than $300 each." Award winners: · Agency Division -- Halton Multicultural Council · Business Division -- Bunge Canada · Education Division -- Fern Hill School It was a photo finish, but Team Oakville crossed the finish line with its head high, achieving its $4-million fundraising goal -- the largest ever for the United Way of Oakville (UWO). The good news was announced Tuesday at UWO's achievement celebration at Oakville's Sheridan College. The event, which included an awards ceremony and performances by Sheridan's theatre students, also honoured those who contributed to the 2011 campaign. "We had an audacious goal set for ourselves, but our hearts told us that we could do (it) because we knew that the aid was there in the community. We challenged ourselves, we challenged our community and we set a target above what we should have, but we set it," said Dr. Jeff Zabudsky, CEO and president of Sheridan College and 2011 UWO cabinet chair. "Volunteers are really the life blood of the United Way. It's the people who choose to be leaders in their community (and) step forward and we couldn't outstanding: Gerry Popp, the winner of the fifth annual Lloyd Duncan Memorial Award for Outstanding Volunteerism. chair. "Jeff proved strong leadership starts at the top and his leadership of the campaign has been a major reason for all of our successes." UWO assists more than 30,000 people in the community each year across agencies that support more than 60 different programs. The agencies focus on strengthening families, supporting independence and wellbeing in seniors, those in crisis and promoting self-sufficiency.
