We kept playing hard," Weber said. "It was more competitive, and it was a lot more fun." Rangers coach Barry Adams agreed, conceding that Tri-County opponents don't often offer up much of a challenge for his squad. "They love it (playing tougher teams)," Adams said of his charges. "It gets their energy level up." And the Richard Bell tournament wasn't the first time Oakville has measured up well against tougher competition. The Rangers' only loss this season came in an `A' tournament, a one-goal loss to Kitchener in the final, and Oakville has defeated the top teams in other leagues at tournaments this year. "That's one heck of a team," said Burlington assistant coach John Cox, whose Bulldogs sit one point out of first place in the Alliance. "They're well-coached, welldisciplined, cycle the puck well and also break out well from their own end." Blake Adams and Matthew McDougall also scored in the final for Oakville, which won all six of its games in the tournament by a 35-8 margin. Also contributing to the Rangers' success were Mark Benn, James Carroll, Riley Cerovcec, Noah Darling, Matt Gigeris, Jamie Langill, Benjamin Lyytikainen, Cole Maddox, Jonathan Policelli, Avery Robertson, Ryan Sheppard, Patrick Stewart, Kyle Truffen and Cole Webster. Brent Robertson and David Weber are the club's assistant coaches, Chris Gigeris is the trainer and David Langill is the manager. Quick start keys minor peewee AA win It didn't take long for the Oakville minor peewee AA Rangers to lock up a victory in their Richard Bell final. Oakville scored a pair of goals in the opening 1:35 of the championship game, including a goal in the first 15 seconds. And when a team plays as well defensively as the Rangers have this season, two goals are often more than enough. The Rangers doubled their lead in the second period, then allowed just a powerplay goal to the Newmarket Redmen the rest of the way to earn a 4-1 victory and ERIC RIEHL / OAKVILLE BEAVER Oakville minor atom AE Rangers forward Jackson Weber (foreground, left) skates with the puck during last week's Richard Bell final. Weber scored late in regulation to give Oakville a 2-1 win over the Burlington Bulldogs. claim gold at their hometown competition Thursday at Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. "We had a couple good breaks early... we took advantage of our chances and our guys were more focused than we've been all season," Oakville head coach Craig Gaskin said. The Rangers won all six of their games by a combined score of 35-6. Oakville held all but one of its opponents in the tournament to one goal or less. "Our guys don't like getting scored on. Our players don't and our goalies don't," Gaskin said, "so they don't let it happen." Rangers forward David Gunner, highlighted by Gaskin as a player who elevated his play during the tournament, said teamwork was key to overcoming the pressures of playing at home. "We felt pressure, but we did pretty good with it," said the 11-year-old, a Grade 6 student at St. Michael. "We really work together." Holden Doggett scored twice for the Rangers in the final, including the opening goal of the contest. Lukas Georgas and Aidan Child had the other Rangers markers. It wasn't the first tournament success of the season for the Rangers, who are 17-3-6 in Tri-County play. Oakville won the regional Silver Stick title earlier this year in Whitby, where it beat three of the top 10 teams in Ontario. The Redmen, who the Rangers dispatched so easily last week, are also one of the topranked clubs in the province. "Our guys can play with anybody in Ontario," Gaskin said. "But they have to bring it. They know they have to work hard." Other members of the Rangers are Patrick Maloney, Ben Dunford, Paul Costin, Benji Webster, Philip Mazzuca, Matthew Cvitak, Evan McIntyre, Sam Gaskin, Davis Boulding, Christopher Elliott, Jake Howden, Alex Pain and Sam Roy. Paul Elliott is an assistant coach, Steve Roy and Daniel Child are trainers, and Bob Malone manages the team.
