Artscene LET'S DANCE: Sheridan music theatre students (l-r) Jessica Cox, Joel Gomez, Christopher Webb, Michelle Bouey and Julia McLellan prepare for their upcoming fundraising concert, Stepping Up, which takes place tomorrow (Saturday). 27 · Friday, November 11, 2011 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Hear Mozart and Strauss in concert By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The Oakville Chamber Orchestra is starting its 2011-12 concert season with a pair of music pieces, one from the Classical era and one from a later era, which emulates the former. The orchestra will perform its two concerts of Who Says We're Bourgeois?, on Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 12, 13). The first piece in the concert is the Piano Concerto #5 in C composed by a master of the Classical era, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It is followed by a performance of the Neo-Classical piece, Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme Suite, by the late Romantic, early modern era composer Richard Strauss. "Certainly this is a piece by Strauss that could be called Neo-Classical," said music director Charles Demuynck. "It refers to older music, Classical composers and Baroque composers. One of the movements is actually an arrangement of a French Baroque composer's music." Despite the emulation of the Strauss piece, written just after the First World War, the two pieces in the concert are quite distinct. The second and third year students from the program will be performing the school's annual fundraising concert, this year titled Stepping Up!, on Saturday (Nov. 12) at the school. The concert will raise money for Sheridan's emergency student fund. "This is a wonderful sampling of the incredible talent here at the school," Denton said. The show will feature Dance Critiques (dance performances) by the second year students and Pop Critiques (singing) of the students in the third and graduating year. The Pop Critiques portion of the show will be a highlight of some of the performances the students will do this December in Toronto. The Sheridan College Pop Critiques is a variety show the school puts on to show off its talented students while they are still in school, before they head off into the working field. Denton commended the dancers in the show as well. "They are creative dance pieces that are funny, wonderful, sexy and hilarious. This year they are better than ever before," he said. "The show will be full of energy. I saw every Dance Critique and I'm looking forward to seeing them all again." The night will also include raffles, featuring prizes such as tickets to major musical productions in Toronto. The concert will take place in the Macdonald-Heaslip Hall at the Oakville campus. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $20. For tickets, call the box office at 905815-4049.
