Take k valuables l bl out of f your y car or risk kl losing g them h Take k your valuables l bl out of f your car or be prepared to lose them. This is the message the Halton Regional Police Service will attempt to hammer home during the `No Valuables on Board' initiative, which is on this week until Saturday, Nov. 12. Police said the aim of the initiative is to educate members of the public about the rise in theft from vehicles and how to prevent it. `Carhopping,' police said, has become a common practice in Halton, l which h h sees suspects move from car to car, often in the middle of the night, until they find a vehicle with something worth stealing inside. GPS equipment, sunglasses, Blackberries, cash and personal identification have all been targeted in past instances of these crimes. In many cases, the suspects do not even have to break into the car because a door is unlocked. This year cards, similar to the `Baby b on Board' d type, will ll b be handh d ed out, complete with suction cups, with the intention that the public will place them inside the rear window of their vehicles. The cards will serve as a reminder to residents not to leave their valuables in their vehicles. It will also notify would-be thieves that the owner of the vehicle subscribes to crime prevention ideology and the chances of valuables being present is highly unlikely and therefore breaking into the h vehicle h l is not worth h the h risk of getting caught. In partnership with Crime Stoppers of Halton, Halton police and GO Transit officers will be stationed at various GO Transit stations region-wide throughout the week to distribute information postcards and the `No Valuables on Board' cards to commuters and answer any public safety questions they may have. Through this action Halton police l and d GO Transit members are hoping to reach the more than 14,000 area residents who use GO Transit each day. Halton police volunteers from the Communities on Phone Patrol program will be distributing this information at sports and theatre complexes throughout the region. The Oakville-based Lorne Scots Army Cadets will also be spreading the word in downtown Oakville and Bronte. 25 · Friday, November 11, 2011 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Speak up!
