Organizers say local l l polar l bear b dip d has h bigger b purpose Participants in the 27th annual Courage Polar Bear Dip are surely waiting in anticipation as New Year's Day fast approaches. Oakville's Courage brothers, Todd and Trent, are organizing the Jan. 1 fundraiser dip near Coronation Park in Oakville and invite all to jump in on the day. The past 16 years the event has taken place, the Courage brothers have teamed up with World Vision Canada, asking the dippers to collect donations for the cause -- to date the event has raised $810,000 for the organization. "It started off as a silly, fun thing for us and our friends to do and it evolved. It keeps getting bigger and bigger every year. Now that we have a charity involved it gives it a bigger purpose," Todd Courage told The Oakville Beaver r in a recent interview. After this dip, the brothers expect to raise just under $1 million overall for World Vision. The past five or six years, the dip's fundraising efforts have hit about $100,000 per year and organizers are expecting no different this time. Drawing in people from Oakville, the GTA and beyond, the event boasted 800 dippers last year. With safety a concern during the event, dippers go in waves of about 200 at a time, with no more than two rows going in. The next wave does not jump in until the first is out. There are emergency personnel in the water, in proper suits and boats. The dippers also have spotters. When dippers emerge from the water, they can head to heated tents to dry off. Registration at Coronation Park begins at 12:30 p.m. and closes at 1:45 p.m. on the day. The dip begins at 2 p.m. In addition, the day will feature live music, as well as a costume contest at 1:15 p.m. A grand prize draw will follow after registration closes. There will be a post-dip celebration at the Tin Cup, 1540 North Service Rd. W., at approximately 3 p.m. Parking at Coronation Park is limited but there will be a return shuttle service from the Lick's restaurant in Bronte (2420 Lakeshore Rd. W.).
