Kettle campaign needs all the help it can get By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF The Salvation Army of Oakville says its Christmas Kettle campaign is going strong thus far, but there is still a ways to go for it to reach its fundraising goal. This year's campaign target is $130,000. The church's co-ordinator of community and family services, Aisha Chaney, said the Salvation Army is en route to that target. "With five days left to go we have reached 70 per cent of our goal. Still a ways to go, however, we are hopeful we can achieve it with volunteer support and the generosity of people in the community to spare even a dollar as they pass by a kettle," said Chaney. Volunteers may still sign up to fill the holes in the schedule of f volunteers who supervise the kettles. With just days to go until Christmas, Chaney says the Salvation Army needs community support, not just financially but to also volunteer at the kettles. "An empty kettle can't receive money so we definitely have spots available for people looking to help out," said Chaney. Despite some of the shortfalls, Chaney is proud of the effort so far. "We had great support so far from individuals and community groups. We're definitely looking forward to our finale to the Kettles on Christmas Eve at Fairway Hills," she said. Chaney encouraged everyone to chip in a bit and help out. "The work we do in the community is really important," she said. "We do see the need for it. We have an increase in numbers of people applying this year. A lot more families applied to us this year than last year. The money we collect with the kettles will help support those families, not only at this time of year, but throughout 2012. This is our largest fundraising effort of the year." The kettles are in 10 locations throughout Oakville. High school students are encouraged to volunteer towards their compulsory community service hours. Those interested in volunteering can contact the kettle co-ordinator, Mickie Angas, at 905-464-6201 or mdaniel49@ cogeco.ca. The Salvation Army also collects toys this time of year for children from as young as infants to those who are 17. People can drop off toys at the Toy Mountain at Oakville Place Shopping Centre until Dec. 23. The Salvation Army also has a Toy Depot, located at 1360 Speers Rd.
