Halton l is safest... f again For the fourth year, Halton has been ranked the safest place to live in the GTA and the safest regional municipality in Canada -- by Maclean's magazine in its 2010 ranking of Canada's most dangerous cities. Prince George, B.C., once again received the title of Canada's most crime-ridden city, followed by Victoria, B.C., Saskatoon, Sask., Red Deer, Alta., and Regina, Sask. -- Caledon, Ont., was listed as the safest city in Canada. "This achievement is the result of our residents, businesses and local municipalities, working together with the great police officers and staff of the Halton Regional Police Service, to ensure Halton Region is a safe place to live, work, raise a family and retire," said Regional Chair Gary Carr, noting the record is one reason so many people choose to call Halton home." "Although crime rates are going down across Canada, our overall crime rate in Halton was 54.7 per cent lower than the Canadian average," said Halton Police Chief Gary Crowell, explaining while police do play a role in preventing and deterring g crime, , crime rates can be influenced by y many socio-economic factors. "Halton has earned this notable distinction for the fourth year in a row due to the incredible support for policing and public safety shown by the people of our community, who work closely in partnership with our officers, civilian personnel and volunteers to help ensure that Halton remains as safe tomorrow as it is today." Crowell said traffic safety -- not in Maclean's ranking -- is an area he'd like to see improved in Halton. "One serious injury or fatality from a preventable motor vehicle collision is one too many, so I encourage all motorists to slow down, buckle up, pay attention to the road, and don't get behind the wheel if you are impaired," he said. Maclean's s based its ranking on 2010 annual crime data from Statistics Canada for municipal police services serving the nation's 100 largest populations. The Crime Severity Index (CSI) scores six personal and property crimes: homicide, sexual assault, aggravated assault, auto theft, robbery and breaking and entering.
