Cell tower add-ons not welcomed By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Despite objections from area residents, a cell tower r located at Bronte Road and Rebecca Street previously used for emergency purposes only, is going commercial. Oakville Town council gave a green light Monday to the Halton Regional Police Service, which is allowing Bell Mobility to co-locate on its tower. In exchange, Halton police will be able to use a Bell Mobility cell tower in Brookville in Milton, thereby avoiding tower rental fees of approximately $36,000 per year. Police said the arrangement is essential to overhaul what Halton Police Chief Gary Crowell has described as Halton's failing Gary Crowell emergency radio system. Council's decision to allow the increased use of the Oakville tower, did not, however, sit well with some residents. "I'm very disappointed," said Wendy Cockburn, who lives a few hundred metres from the tower. "I was definitely hoping for a denial or a deferral at least. I feel very passionate about the Bell antennas not being activated." The tower itself has been in place at its Bronte Road/ / Rebecca Street location since 1996, however, on Nov. 30, 2011 it was brought to the attention of Town staff that Bell Mobility was placing antennas on the tower. Staff asked Bell to cease work at the site until the Town had the opportunity to conduct its due diligence.
