Admiral advocates education Continued from page 5 7 · Thursday, December 1, 2011 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com about his time in the navy, which has seen him travel around the world from the Persian Gulf to Japan and just about everywhere in between. Smith said the navy is a great career option as it allows people to see the world, form lifelong friendships, develop leadership skills and offers many training and job opportunities. During the presentation, Smith held the students' attention by handing out navy hats, backpacks and other items whenever they got a question about his presentation correct. Above all else, Smith called on students to complete their education, stating this would not only allow them to enter the navy, but just about any career they want in the future. "At the end of the day, without an education you are really not going to go very far," said Smith. "If you leave here this morning with nothing else from my talk, remember that education is important." Smith has served on numerous Canadian ships and served as the commanding officer of a navel shipyard on Canada's East Coast.
