Late that same year, after two of his sisters had run away from home because of the shame of the assault, they learned his father was in a refugee camp in Uganda. Chikwanine, his mother and sister travelled to find him. In the refugee camp, he was told of a place called North America. "My cousin said there's this place called North America where you could walk in the streets with white socks and they would never get dirty," he recalled. "In the place called North America, there was a man called Michael Jordan, he was this tall," he raised his hand to demonstrate the height, "and he got paid $30 million to jump ... and throw a ball in a basket -- a ball in a basket." Chikwanine did not believe people would pay someone to toss a ball into a basket. His cousin continued, "In North America, people spend hundreds of dollars to go down to this park and see this big mouse with big ears. I looked at my cousin and said we have mice running around every single morning and no one from North America would pay hundreds of dollars to watch a mouse running around." After his father's death, Chikwanine arrived in Canada. The first thing he did when he got off the plane was to eat some brown-coloured snow. "It was salty, it was lumpy. It was probably the worst thing I've tasted in my life," he said. www. .com Joking aside, he told his audience that what he really noticed was the fact he could look at a clear sky. "Walking from school back home in Congo, we saw bullets fly by as though they were shooting stars. "When I used to go to sleep I used to listen to bombs," he said. He entered high school shortly after and quickly learned children here complain a lot. A friend of his had asked her parents for a pink Motorola Razr, but she was given a black one instead. She complained terribly about it, Chikwanine said. This reminded him of his uncle and cousins back home, who, whenever he called, would ask his family to send them money just so they could attend school. He said he approached his English teacher and asked how he could stop the students from complaining. The response from the teacher was: "We've been trying for many years. If you have any ideas, please come up to us and tell us." He wrote his own story in an essay and passed it around the school, hoping it would get the students to be more grateful. It didn't. When he was in Grade 12, he heard of Craig Kielburger, the founder of Free the Children. It was Kielburger who inspired him to continue to try to make a positive change.
