Anti-bullying messages on local buses and in theatres By Dominik Kurek OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF A number of anti-bullying messages, created by Halton students, can now be seen on the side of local buses and at the theatre. People may have noticed the arrival of ads on buses in Oakville, as well as those in Burlington and Milton. The ad read, "Words can HURT but they also can HEAL. The ads popped up during the recent National Bullying Awareness Week. And as the wildly popular Twilight Saga continues, with the opening of Breaking Dawn at the theatre, Galaxy Cineplex aired pre-show videos to raise awareness about bullying. The video was shown at the theatre until Nov. 24 and will now be shown at Encore Theatres in Oakville and in Burlington during the holiday season, Dec. 26 to Jan. 2. The campaign also features a calendar containing positive messages and posters. These anti-bullying tools were created by Halton high school students and were selected as winners of a contest started a year ago. The contest was part of the 2011 Give school boards. Students were challenged to create messages that called for action against bullying. The calendar, made by students at T.A. Blakelock High School, was the winning piece. The Give Respect-Get Respect video, by Milton District High School students, took second place. The poster featured on the side of buses was the third place winner. A Lester B. Pearson High School student created it. Another video that came out of E.C. Drury High School in Milton is also part of f the campaign. The video, called Close the Door on Bullying, speaks to the impact of bullying on some youth. The upcoming 2012 Give Respect GetRespect Join the Movement campaign will focus on the power of students to create a respectful and positive environment to prevent bullying.
