19 · Wednesday, December 7, 2011 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Be a Santa to a local senior The Home Instead Senior Care network has launched its annual Be a Santa to a Senior campaign and is looking for volunteers for a giftwrapping session this Sunday. "(It's) is a way to show our gratitude to an important segment of our community that has contributed so much throughout the years," Scott Johnson, managing director at Oakville's Home Instead Senior Care, said in a news release. "We hope to bring gestures of holiday cheer and goodwill to more seniors this year." According to the 2006 census, nearly 1.8 million Canadian seniors aged 75 and up were living alone, stated the release. The program is also designed to give back to deserving seniors, as well as help stimulate human contact and social interaction for older adults who are unlikely to have guests during the holidays. The popular campaign that delivered more than 1,500 gifts to local seniors last year is being planned at a time when seniors' gift requests are expected to increase as they struggle to keep pace with the rising cost of living, Johnson said in the release. To help make the campaign a success, organizers partner with local retailers, non-profit agencies and volunteers from the community -- this year, retailers and community partners, such as St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School, Shoppers Home Health, CIBC, Walmart Supercentre, Zellers, Royal LePage, and A Country Mile Café, Home Accents and Gifts are taking part in the program. Sunday's (Dec. 11) gift-wrapping party will be held at Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Rd., to prepare the gifts for delivery to seniors. Yoga studio d helps h l keep k Halton's l children h ld warm The Children's Aid Foundation of Halton is on the hunt for cozy pyjamas for the children in their care. Donations can currently be made for the third annual Holiday Pyjama Drive, which is organized by Robyn Bowman, owner of Creating Space Yoga Studio. "This amazing community of yogis and neighbours pull together each year to reach out to children in need in their community," stated a news release. "Their wish for the holidays is that all children can go to sleep over the holidays feeling warm, cozy and cared for." Although all sizes of pyjamas are needed, organizers say there is more of a need for sizes suitable for children ages 10-18. Donations will be accepted until Dec. 18 at the 594 Chartwell Rd. studio, as well as at Grace Academy of Dance and Performing Arts at 785 Pacific Rd.
