"A minority of desperate people bought into the Islamist story," Dyer said. Those revolutionaries were completely rejected this spring, as Arab masses used non-violent demonstrations to demand democratic governments. "This is a repudiation of the entire Islamist argument," he said. "They really have lost relevance in the Arab world." While he expects Arabs will elect political parties, and even governments, which identify themselves as Islamic, Dyer suggested those parties pose no more of a global threat than Christian democratic parties throughout Europe. "There is no need to panic, in my view," he said, noting that politicians working within a democratic system can be conservative and Muslim without being radical, violent or extremist. Without revolutionary groups looking to advance their agenda through terrorist attacks, Dyer said he believes the threat of terrorism coming out of the Middle East will largely disappear. He added that he sees no reason to fear an oil embargo, and expects new democratic governments will want to continue to see the oil flow to provide cash flow to their growing countries. "The oil is where their money comes from," he said. However, while the story of the Arab spring is a happy one for most countries around the world, it's less clear whether democratic governments in the region will be more or less hostile to Israel, said Dyer. To commemorate Appleby College's centenary, the school has launched a Centennial Speakers Series, showcasing a number of the country's most respected and influential Canadians. While Dyer spoke late last week, on Monday, students and faculty heard from journalist and science expert Bob McDonald. McDonald has been communicating science internationally through television, radio, print and live presentations for more than 30 years.
