Bessie was a long-time member of the Glen Abbey Golf Club and the Oakville Curling Club. She leaves behind many friends who have been impacted by her over the decades, whether through her music in her home or piano playing at Government House in Victoria; her agility and passion for tennis; her insights and wit with literature, this prairie-born lady forged deep and lasting friendships. Passed away, November 17, 2011 peacefully at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington. On October 27th Kurt sustained a stroke while curling, doing what he loved best, being active and surrounded by friends. For all his 86 years he loved life and lived it to the fullest, always engaging the world around him with an insatiable curiosity and a keen interest in people. Kurt has always served as an excellent role model on how to engage and enjoy life. He emigrated from Germany to Nova Scotia in 1933, at the age of 8 and during his early adult life he says that he his hand at many things. A graduate of Haileybury School of Mines in Northern Ontario (1948), he embarked in 1956 on a fulfilling 30-year career with Alchem Limited. After retiring as Vice President of Sales at age 60, his greatest loves were travelling, being with his family particularly his 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, spending time at his cottage, staying in touch with dear friends and enjoying time with his curling, hunting and fishing buddies. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Isabel, nee Selinger, (1967) and his parents Heinrich Gustav Speth (1966) and Elfriede Speth (1999). He will be dearly missed by his wife of 40 years, Betty Poirier, by his 5 children, Janet, Judy, Brian and wife Kathy, Michael and wife Kara , Jackie and husband Albert, his grandchildren and great grandchildren and his brothers Bill Speth and Jean from Wetaskawin AB, and Fred Speth and Grace from Bridgewater, NS. As well, the extended family and many friends he made over the years will certainly have wonderful memories and stories to tell for a while yet. A most precious gift he gave us was his memoirs, Recrossing the Portages of Life, which he wrote and published in 2005, to be enjoyed by family and friends alike. He explored every continent except Australia and the Antarctic, always wanting to get to the top of the mountain. In the past year alone, Kurt travelled to the Arctic and the Galapagos Islands! He has now embarked on his next great adventure and we wish him all the best! Although Kurt requested cremation, this is not his last word. He wanted his family and friends to come together one more time for a Celebration of his Life on Saturday December 3 at 11a.m. at Oakview Funeral Home, 56 Lakeshore Road. W.
