"The kids also go around twice a day to check that lights and monitors are turned off to conserve energy in the school." The school's Eco Executive Council received a $500 grant from Halton last year for its program, Project Grow -- an outdoor classroom built along Rebecca Street earlier this year, she said. She hopes to maintain the school's gold certification for 2011-12 with additional add-ons to the classroom. It is looking to generate funds to make the space more interactive. "We would like to expand that project to include some native species of plant life from the Halton area, including some echinacea for attracting butterflies, so the students can go out, study and observe and sketch, and really interact with nature in that space," said Wojkowski. "Right now, we have a garden space, whatever was put in 20 years ago to make it look green and pretty, but it's not very effective in applying the Ontario science curriculum." "Students on the eco team have an opportunity to be leaders, not just within their school, but in the community, to share the message with other children and their families that the environment is important to us."
