The Halton Regional Police Association (HRPA), in partnership with the service's Tactical Rescue Unit, raised $12,000 at a recent annual fundraiser to support the Autism Ontario­Halton Chapter. The event held at Monaghan's Sports Pub and Grill in Oakville hosted more than 300 police officers, their friends, families and members of the community. The first such fundraiser was held in 1999 through an HRPA officer who had a son with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). And more assistance is on the way. Last year, the HRPA Tactical Rescue Unit hosted a Christmas party with more than 300 people, including children with ASD, their siblings and parents. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder that emerges in infants and young children and continues through adulthood. ASD can result in a delay in or lack of language communication, impaired social skills and behavioural problems. It is found four times more often in boys than girls. More than 80,000 Ontarians struggle with ASD, with an estimated 5,000 living in Halton. This year's Children's Christmas Party hosted by the HRPA Tactical Rescue Unit, is open to all families with an ASD child. It will be held Sunday, Dec. 4, from 2-4:30 p.m., at the OE Banquet and Conference Centre, 2245 Speers Rd., Oakville.
