In Halton, 1,200 people become homeless every year and at last count, there were 2,347 requests for emergency shelter -- but only half of those who asked for help were able to be placed. These are the numbers that will make the difference -- $55 (with a $25 charitable tax receipt), which buys a ticket to the fifth annual Empty Bowls fundraiser for Home Suite Hope. There are 700 tickets available for the Sunday, Oct. 16 event that runs from noon to 3 p.m. This time around, the soup is on at St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School, located at 1080 Linbrook Rd. The annual event outgrew its previous venue at Appleby College. Moving it to St. Mildred's (near Cornwall Road and Eighth Line), ensures no patrons will have to wait outside. In the school gym, 16 chefs and caterers will offer ladles full of their delicious talent. After filling your tummy with as much fresh soup as you'd like, the arftully-painted pottery bowls, courtesy of the Oakville Art Society, Pottery Supply House and Crackpot Studios, are yours for the taking home -- as well as a cookbook full of recipes to try making yourself. "All of our soup vendor restaurants are involved in the cookbook, but the project has also attracted many other soup makers in the area," said Jules Graham-Hood who is spearheading this year's Empty Bowls event. This is the first time a cookbook, called Souper Bowl V, has been $ With the purchase of any regular or sale-priced carpet or underpad. 99 BASIC CARPET INSTALLATION NO MONEY DOWN, NO INTEREST FOR UP TO 3 YEARS** 100% SATISFACTION GUARANTEE when you use your Sears FinancialTM Credit Card. Like the Oct. 16 fundraiser, creating the cookbook has been a community effort; from the recipes provided by local chefs, restaurateurs and retailers to the design, which was provided by grocery chain Longos' marketing department. The cookbooks cost $20 and are available at Empty Bowls. Besides the change of venue and the addition of a cookbook, Home Suite Hope has changed its charitable focus to helping single-parent families, particularly single moms and their children. According to a May 2011 report, Not to be Forgotten: Homeless Women in Hamilton, women are more vulnerable to homelessness due to spousal violence, poverty, as a result of joblessness or minimal skills, having sole responsibility for rearing children and poor health. The need for stable, affordable housing in Halton increases annually. There has been a 42 per cent increase in lowincome families in the region since 2001, which means the 8,300 households struggling financially, mainly in Burlington and Oakville, face the threat of homelessness more acutely. The supply for affordable housing in Halton is certainly not meeting the demand, said GrahamHood. The current wait list for affordable housing for families would take an astounding 25 years to fill. Halton also has relatively few transitional housing facilities, and options are not consistently available for singleparent families. As a result, the majority of families placed in emergency shelter units in Halton were forced to leave the region at the end of their stay, to secure more affordable housing. Home Suite Hope is filling the void but more help is needed. It received its official non-profit charitable status in September 2004, the same month it purchased its first home. By November that year, five residents moved into a beautiful, newly renovated home. In 2008, the charity purchased a modest walkup apartment building with six apartments. To be a part of creating more affordable housing solutions in Halton, log on to www.homesuitehope.org and click on the Empty Bowls icon. Donations of household items can be made anytime to Home Suite Hope, from bedding to can openers. "Sponsors, supporters and volunteers make all the difference," said Graham-Hood, "especially because Home Suite Hope doesn't get ongoing government funding." Tickets to the Souper Bowl event cost $55 and include a $25 charitable donation. Tickets can be purchased online at www. homesuitehope.org. REV_NE101H111
