www.insideHALTON.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, November 10, 2011 · 26 Health Neither divorce nor death will dampen the spirits of the people who loved Gerri Brown (Bennett). An all-too-long bout with breast cancer kicked the mother of two into high gear during her years of remission and she quickly became an eager fundraiser. Brown heartily tackled the CIBC Run for the Cure for the last five years of her life. Sadly, the 2010 run would be her last. She died in February. In tribute to the 51-year-old woman's life, her ex-husband, Larry Bennett, who hails from Oakville and their daughter Jennifer, who now lives in Keswick, put a team together called, Gerri's Kids. With pink T-shirts emblazoned with their team name, thanks to a donation from Bennett's local gym Snap, more SUBMITTED PHOTO than a dozen friends and family headed to Brown's Run stomping grounds in Barrie on a chilly October Sunday, to FOR GERRI: Team members of Gerri's Kids show off their pink T-shirts as they participate in the join 5,000 other Run supporters. CIBC Run for the Cure in honour of the late Gerri Brown. The team raised $8,000 in its first year. The tribute team raised $8,000 in the process too. "We thought we'd take over where Gerri left off," said Bennett. Although the pair divorced more than a decade ago, and Brown had since remarried, she, Bennett and their kids In honour of Gerri Brown remained close. When Brown's health worsened last summer and her prognosis poor, her two children, who were both engaged to be married, bumped up their wedding dates to January, so that their mother could be part of the celebrations. She managed to hold on to see her children joined in matrimony. Weeks later she died. "Gerry would think it was awesome that we did this," said Bennett of their participation in the Run. It was an easy feat for Bennett and his daughter, who are both fitness buffs. And next year they intend to recruit Brown's son, Daniel and more team members for Gerri's Kids. "We'll carry on until a cure is found," said Bennett. For more information about the CIBC Run for the Cure, log on to www. cibcrunforthecure.com.
