After being educated in medicine, Patterson went on to sub-specialize in geriatric medicine. He later joined the faculty of McMaster University and became a professor in 1994. At McMaster, he has led the division of geriatric medicine, as well as geriatric services at Hamilton Health Services. His research includes preventive health care for seniors, frailty, various aspects of cognitive disorders and dementia. Last year, Patterson won a Hamilton Health Sciences Cornerstone Award. At the dinner event he will describe normal memory changes that come with aging, define dementia and discuss whether it can be delayed or prevented, and he will present some of the latest developments in the assessment and treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The dinner will take place at the Oakville Conference Centre, located at QEW and Bronte Road. The cost to attend is $35 for members, $45 for non-members and $15 for students. With the nominations now open, the Halton District School Board is encouraging parents, staff and colleagues to nominate a teacher for the Prime Minister's Awards for Teaching Excellence. The program is Canada's way of recognizing the best teachers, promote what they have achieved and share their innovative and successful teaching practices. Winning teachers will receive a certificate, a pin and a letter of congratulations from the prime minister. The recipient's school will also receive a certificate. Additionally, as many as 15 recipients will receive Certificates of Excellence, which include a financial award of $5,000, and 50 Certificates of Achievement will be handed out with $1,000.
