Twenty-five years ago Hansen, a Canadian paralympian and activist for people with spinal cord injuries, circled the world in his wheelchair to raise awareness and money for spinal cord injury research. To mark this event, 7,000 Canadians are taking part in a nine-month, 12,000 km relay retracing the Canadian segment of Hansen's original tour. That relay will stop in Oakville tomorrow, Melissa Vassallo according to a Town of Oakville release. A recreational skate will kick off the Oakville leg of the celebration starting at 5 p.m. This will be followed by the arrival of Oakville's World Tour medal bearer Melissa Vassallo at 6:45 p.m. As one of 7,000 medal-bearers from across Canada, Vassallo will walk the arena's driveway, likely to be lined with cheering residents armed with glow sticks and noisemakers, en route to the official reception inside the arena. Vassallo, who became a person with a disability as the result of a car accident in 2002, has dedicated her life to making her community accessible.
