ALL IN-STOCK LAMINATE, HARDWOOD, CERAMICS & VINYL Keep puppies calm T he enthusiasm and playfulness of puppies is appealing, but those with seemingly unstoppable whirlwinds of energy can tire even the most patient owner. For the first couple of years part of puppy ownership is managing their need to use their boundless fervor. Here are ways to keep your young dog happy, while retaining a sense of calm in your household. Exercise, exercise, and exercise it's the most obvious of ways to help puppies burn off energy, but dependent upon the quality, providing the opportunity to exercise may not be the complete solution. Putting any dog in the backyard to run around by itself is usually not enough to tire a pet out. After a brief run it is likely that your canine friend will appear at the door asking to come in, or simply find a spot to lie down. Engage your dog in an age-appropriate activity (chasing a ball, playing catch with a Frisbee, or simply interacting with you) to help engage both its mind and body. Play offers a positive time to interact and also gives you the opportunity to support commands used in training. Fitting your puppy with a long lead (10-12' rope) allows the dog the freedom to roam within your reach and build confidence. Using this method under close supervision, to avoid the dangers of entanglement, will allow your dog to be curious within reach. Quiet time also offers another chance to support training commands, while teaching your pet that it's okay to be calm. If you have chosen your breed carefully, you will be able to anticipate the balance of activity and quiet time required to keep your puppy happy. As dogs age they naturally calm down, but for some breeds their instinctive need to be active remains with them at varying levels throughout their life. Reward calm behaviour and the dog will quickly learn that this is a positive thing to do. Sit down, read a book, watch television and wait until your dog lies, sits or simply stands still near to you. At the moment of calm use your training language (ex."Good boy", "Yes") to tell your dog that they are behaving well. Then offer a treat for their positive behaviour. Eventually the dog will default to calm behaviour instead of remaining active.
