But an equally legendary panel of wine tasting trailblazers met recently in the heart of Niagara's wine country with the celestial assignment of judging the world's best for the 2007 Toronto Wine and Cheese Show. Niagara wines were measured against international entries at the competition held for the second year at the Niagara College Teaching Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake. They will be selected, scored and tasted again, by thousands of consumers, March 23-25 at the International Centre on Airport Road in Mississauga. More than 200 wines from around the world were entered into the competition and judged Saturday, Feb. 10 at the Niagara-on-the-Lake campus of Niagara College. The winners will be announced at the Toronto show, which last year attracted the largest crowd in the event's history, more than 33,000 visitors who came to taste and learn. It's a great platform for Niagara wineries to compete against international markets and show off the VQA quality wines being produced from Niagara vineyards. And the platform has been elevated higher than ever in the event's quarter-century history. The show has been completely revamped under new management for the past two years with Premier Consumers Shows, a division of Metroland Media Group Ltd. Behind the scenes as show manager, Metroland's Marti Milks has been moving at warp speed to produce the "finest wine and culinary event in Toronto". "The Toronto Wine and Cheese Show is a destination delight of great wines, fine spirits, micro breweries and for foodies, a great selection of the best cheese and a lot of other culinary delights," says Milks. "Toronto is a huge market for Niagara wines and the show is a great opportunity to build a strong Niagara presence," said Matt Loney, Director of Marketing at Creekside Estate Winery which last year brought home international recognition with the Best Red Wine of Show with its 2004 Shiraz. "Ideally, we want to get consumers here to show our wines and what the region has to offer. We make so many great wines and we're less than an hour away," Loney said. John Ogryzlo, dean of the environment, horticulture and agribusiness division at Niagara College said, holding the unique international competition in the heart of Canada's wine country highlights that Ontario makes great wines.
