We listened to residents and in 2011 alone, we committed $190 million to Regional infrastructure projects. This will help us support and manage growth, and contribute toward our goal of creating sustainable communities. Upgrading and adding to our infrastructure will help us to reduce commute times, provide a high-quality water supply to new communities and complete preventive maintenance on key services such as wastewater mains. On October 5, Regional Council endorsed Halton's most recent Transportation Master Plan, called The Road to Change, which plans our transportation system up to the year 2031. They also endorsed the Sustainable Halton Wat W er and Wast W ewater Master Plan. This plan ensures that Halton continues to provide a safe and uninterrupted water supply for all Halton residents and businesses that receive Regional water, as well as ensuring that wastewater is collected and treated efficiently and effectively. Three Key Planning Considerations These three points help us to evaluate each project and ensure that we are executing the right projects on behalf of Halton residents and business owners. 1. T To provide the high-quality, y reliable, essential road, water, r waste and wastewater services that our residents and business owners deserve. 2. T To ensure long-term environmental and economic sustainability. That is, to plan and budget for projects that we can afford to complete and maintain. 3. And finally, y to coordinate our construction plans with the Local Municipalities (Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville) to minimize the impact on local residents and businesses. By endorsing these master plans, Halton Regional Council continues its progressive and long term perspective on planning for growth in Halton, while continuing to provide a high level of service to existing communities. Our transportation system is made up of a network of roads and services owned and operated by the Province, the Region and the Local Municipalities. Our Transportation Master Plan looks at all of these components and provides a long range plan to ensure that Halton residents and businesses can travel throughout the region in a safe and efficient manner. The regional road system currently includes more than 900 lane km of roads, 206 traffic signals and 122 bridges and large culverts. Halton's transportation system must provide us with options and seamless travel within Halton and the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. However, it's not enough to just widen roads in order to accommodate the travel demand in 2031. We W also need to incorporate new road corridors, provide for cycling and walking, promote travel demand management (such as carpooling) and accommodate enhanced municipal and inter-regional (GO) transit services. I'd like to thank those of you who have attended past meetings and workshops on our most recent infrastructure master plans. With more than 40 stakeholder meetings and workshops, the development of the Wat W er and W ewater and the Transportation Master Wast Plans was truly a collaboration we can all be proud of.
