The event is open to everyone and no experience is required. "If you're bored of your usual workout and looking for a new way to get fit, this event will show you Zumba at its best," says Annie Char, a Zumba instructor at Oakvillebased Zumbapassion who is sponsoring the event. "Wally is one of the original Zumba instructors. He's been part of this since before Zumba even started more than 10 years ago." Zumba is the hot dance-fitness program created by Colombian fitness and dance instructor Alberto (Beto) Perez. It all started one fateful day when Beto rushed off to teach an aerobics class and forgot his regular music. Luckily he had some tapes in his backpack with the salsa and merengue songs he grew up. He put that music on and instead of counting reps like a typical aerobics class; he led the class through a range of Latin dance steps. The class loved it and the Zumba Fitness-Party was born. Today, more than 10 years have passed and Zumba's website reports, "...it is the world's largest ­ and most successful -dance-fitness program with more than 12 million people of all shapes, sizes and ages taking weekly Zumba classes in over 110,000 locations across more than 125 countries." But Wally and Beto's history goes back even further. The two met as teens in a dance club in Colombia. Both were skilled dancers and they became fast friends. They've been working together as dancers and choreographers ever since. Wally was part of the first Zumba DVD launch in 2003 and he is famous in Zumba circles for his sold-out "Salsa and Merengue Mash Up" sessions at the annual Zumba convention. "Wally is a Zumba superstar and in high demand around the world. His current tour presentations have a clear goal in mind, to reinforce the easy, fluid and non-verbal cueing method popularized by the Zumba program created by Beto Perez. We're thrilled to bring him to Oakville," says Luisa Mayhew, a Zumba Instructor at Zumbapassion. This is Wally's second visit to Oakville this year. His last visit in April was attended by 240 people, which included both long-time Zumba enthusiasts and first-timers. Diaz, who took the time to greet participants, expressed satisfaction for the job well done, impressed by the energy and receptivity. "Wally was awesome. I can't believe he did two hours straight. I had such a great time, and the time flew by," commented Gilma Perez, a participant and Oakville resident.
