Held at the 1080 Linbrook Rd. school on Saturday, Oct. 22, the symposium is called S.W.A.T. 771 (St. Mildred's Women Advancing Technology). It will feature workshops for students and mentors, a keynote address by Mark Breadner of FIRST Canada and a closing presentation by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield. Approximately 17 workshops, run by seven FIRST Robotics Competition teams, will see high school students share their knowledge along with two industry sponsors. Aside from the host team, there will be representation by other teams, including the Red Devils 1334 from Oakville Trafalgar High School and teams from Kincardine, St. Catharines, Toronto, Niagara Falls, even Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. High school students interested in design or the architectural careers need only to look to John Willmott Architect Inc., which is sponsoring a design competition open to Grade 11 and 12 students in Oakville schools. For the competition, students are asked to design a public announcing booth and storage structure for the west baseball diamond at Cornwall Park. Entries will be judged on design concept, overall presentation, technical detail and drawing quality. First, second and third place prizes are an Apple iBook, iPad and iPod Touch, respectively. "We hope to see the community spirit in this C A N A D A' S L A R G E S T event," said John Willmott, in a press release. "We wish to provide students with awareness and exposure to our industry; perhaps on their way to a future role as an architect, designer, builder or other profession." Registrations take place from Oct. 11 to Oct. 24. An information meeting takes place at the John Willmott Architect office, 594 Chartwell Rd., on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. A $20 entry fee will be collected. Submission deadline is Dec. 12. All entrants will have an opportunity to meet with an architectural advisor for consultation to assess progress, answer questions and provide feedback.
