31 · Friday, October 14, 2011 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Walking to make children's wishes come true Thousands of people across Ontario will be walking Oct. 15 to help make children's wishes come true. Georgetown is one of 10 locations across the province participating in Wishmaker Walk for Wishes this month to support The Children's Wish Foundation of Canada. Throughout October, people will walk together to raise funds to grant wishes to children living with lifethreatening illnesses. Individuals, families, groups and companies nationwide are invited to take part. "We are very pleased to have such a positive impact on the lives of the children we serve and their families," said Sandra Harris, Ontario Region director. "And we are confident that, thanks largely to Wishmaker participants, we will continue to grant exceptional wishes to children and their families across Ontario." Participants or "Wishmakers" make contributions by collecting pledges prior to walk day and walking the route in their area. They earn rewards based on the total amount of money they have raised. Harris noted that the Ontario chapter currently has more than 500 pending wishes and the fundraising efforts of Wishmakers will have a tremendous impact their ability to granting the special requests made by the children. The Foundation expects to grant over 1,000 new wishes this year, and with the help of volunteers and donors, is able to grant nearly three wishes every day. Children's Wish is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to fulfilling a favourite wish for children diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses. Since 1984, the organization has worked to grant exceptional wishes to 17,000 children and their families. Georgetown's walk will start at Gellert Community Centre and Park. Registration is at 10 a.m. To register and find a walk location nearest you, visit www.wishmaker.ca.
