The YMCA of Oakville is placing the final call out for nominations from the Oakville community to recognize and celebrate two such individuals in celebration of YMCA Peace Week, from November 20 to 26. For more than 25 years, YMCAs across Canada have come together to designate the third week in November as YMCA Peace Week and host a variety of special activities that explore peace from a local and global perspective. During this year's YMCA Peace Week, the YMCA of Oakville will present YMCA Peace Medallions to one youth (11-29 years) and one adult (30+ years) dedicated to building peace in their community or in communities around the world without any special resources. The recipients will be honoured at the annual YMCA International Community Breakfast for Peace on Nov. 25, running from 7 to 9:30 a.m. at the Peter Gilgan Family YMCA, located at 410 Rebecca Street. Nominate a volunteer today. Nominations are due Oct. 11. Nomination criteria: · Must be, or have been, an Oakville resident. · Individual works to create better communities and promotes innovative and sustainable solutions to violence, conflict and/or discrimination. · Individual must have had a direct impact on people in local, national and/or international communities. · Individual is unpaid for their peacemaking work. · Individual has not been widely recognized for their peacemaking work in the past. Lawyer bares his fangs as Dracula Oakville lawyer Peter Anderson will take on the title role of Dracula at a theatrical production in Hamilton, based on the classic Bram Stoker novel. The production opens Oct. 14 at The Staircase Theatre, put on by the Black Box Fire theatrical company. Anderson, who also teaches law classes, will play the legendary character on the stage in the adapted version, written by Steven Deitz. When Count Dracula turns his gaze on England and two women, Lucy and Mina, their loved ones must come to their rescue. Doctors Seward and Van Helsing lead the crusade against Dracula. Superstars of Comedy in the city Oakville comedian Pat MacDonald has rounded up a number of top stand-up performers for a show he dubs The Superstars of Comedy. The show will take place Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Comedy Bar in Toronto. The show will feature headliner Fraser Young, who has recorded a Comedy Now television special for the Comedy Channel and who has appeared on Much Music's Video On Trial. Other performers will include MacDonald himself. He's appeared at Yuk Yuk's locations across Ontario, on MTV and The Comedy Network; Georgea BrooksHancock who was a finalist in the 2010 Cream of Comedy contest; Josh Elijah who hosts the weekly comedy show I Heart Jokes: Uptown in Toronto; and Nicholas Reynoldson who has appeared on the debut album of Comedy Records and is a regular at Absolute Comedy clubs.
