Blakelock High School n Monday, Sept. 19, I had the privilege of introducing, and thanking Kyle Miller, a guest speaker at my school. He was here at the start of our annual Terry Fox Marathon of Hope fundraiser. For most people, having to speak in front of an entire school can be unsettling, but Kyle Miller made it look easy. He had the usually restless and uninterested student body on the edge of their seats. Kyle completely amazed them with his incredible story of following his dream, defeating cancer and achieving his goals. Kyle is an inspirational speaker who defeated osteogenic sarcoma, the same cancer that took the leg of Canadian hero Terry Fox. He follows his passion by travelling school to school inspiring youths to follow their dreams and achieve their goals. He told us of his love for the sport of lacrosse, how he and a friend playing in the 2006 world championship and won the final game against the undefeated United States. It was a truly inspiring presentation that really reflected Kyle's passion and hard work. Kyle thanked one person for helping him defeat cancer and inspire him to be the person he is today, and that person is legendary Canadian Terry Fox. When Kyle Miller was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma he thought his life would be over, but thanks to what Terry Fox started, Kyle went on to survive. O Together we were able to beat our goal of raising $2,200 by raising $2,300. I can definitely say Kyle Miller inspired me to pursue my dreams and achieve my goals. He taught me to find my passion and to explore it. My passion is writing and I was very excited when my school gave me the chance to write an article about our Marathon of Hope. I am so glad that I was able to be a part of this incredible event. I will never forget what I learned from Kyle Miller and I will always remember the sacrifice Terry Fox made in his battle against cancer and how much it has done for us today in the next steps of defeating cancer once and for all. The Road to Scion Begins... AT OAKVILLE TOYOTA When Terry Fox was diagnosed With osteogenic sarcoma, there was only a 15 per cent chance for survival. Cancer may have taken Terry's life but what he started has raised millions of dollars and saved many lives. That survival rate is now 85 per cent. Each year we honour Terry and what he had started by running and raising more money and awareness for cancer research. If Terry had not started running, if he had just given up and let the cancer win, people like Kyle Miller would not be around today. Because of Terry, Kyle went on to live and achieve his goals. I am very happy my school was able to have Kyle Miller come on the day of our Marathon of Hope. Run by Mrs. Buck's leadership class, the entire school participated in our Marathon in Hope.
