Last week, regional council approved a transit subsidy thats aimed to help the 28,000 Halton households living under the Low Income Cut Off (LICO). The pilot program, dubbed SPLIT, subsidizes half the cost of a monthly adult transit pass for up to 437 residents and will cost the Region $215,000 for 2011/2012. Passes will be distributed on a first come first serve basis for resi- dents who apply through Haltons employment, housing and social services department. Passes will be given out for six-month periods and then applicants will have to re-ap- ply. With the Region paying for half the cost of an adult pass, successful applicants in Oakville would pay $47 for an adult pass, $12.50 for a student pass and $2.50 for a senior pass. In Burlington, riders would pay $44 for an adult pass, $20 for a stu- dent pass and $10 for a senior pass. Milton transit users would pay $30 for an adult pass, $15 for a student pass and $12 for a senior pass. The LICO depends on family size and location. A 2006 Community Development Halton report shows a family of four in Burlington with a total income of $38,610 or less is consid- ered a low-income family. Subsidized transit passes were one of the recommendations made by Haltons Citizens Reference Panel. The SPLIT project will help by covering 50 per cent or more of the cost of public transit to help low income residents with transporta- tion to job interviews, work, school, or to visit families and friends, said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr.
