By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR The Halton high school football season will kick off today (Friday) as the Holy Trinity Titans visit the M.M. Robinson Rams in senior Tier 1 play. Seven other Oakville teams the Loyola Hawks, Abbey Park Eagles, Iroquois Ridge Trailblazers, St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders, White Oaks Wildcats, Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils and T.A. Blakelock Tigers will get their season underway next week. Trinity is the lone local team competing in Tier 1 this season, while Abbey Park, Loyola and Blakelock will play in Tier 2. OT, Ridge, Aquinas and White Oaks will play in Tier 3. Following is a brief look at three of the local senior teams' outlooks for this upcoming season. Holy Trinity The good news for the Titans is that their nemesis, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, appears to be enter- g g yin a rebuildin ear. The bad news is that the Nelson Lords have replaced the Irish as the favourite to win the Halton senior Tier 1 title. Trinity coach Joe Moscato is set- ting the bar relatively low pub- licly, at least for a program that has reached the past two Halton finals, losing to Notre Dame both times. We expect to be competitive, said Moscato. Our goals are to stay healthy and to qualify for the play- offs. Moscato still has plenty of talent to work with. Slotback/defensive back Declan Cross has been heavily recruited by universities across the country, lineman Chris Cipolla is likely headed to a Canadian univer- sity career himself, running back/ linebacker Shaka Fonderson is back from an injury that kept him out last year, quarterback Michael Brooks led the Trinity juniors to a Halton Tier 1 title in 2009, and running back/defensive back Toluwa Fayemi brings speed and talent on both sides of the ball. Moscato expects his teams strength this year will be its overall speed and athleticism. g y pFollowin toda 's 3:30 .m. contest against Robinson, the Titans will be back in action next Friday for a 4:30 p.m. home game against Nelson. Loyola The senior Hawks look to build on the success of their juniors, who won the Tier 2 title a year ago. Quarterback/defensive back Thomas Knapp, receiver/defensive back Daniel Chun, linebacker Austin Passariello and Daniel Drover, defensive back Brett Colangelo and two-way lineman J.P. Ortega are among the numer- ous players that have moved up from junior to senior this season. They join returning seniors like receiver/defensive back James DeMelo, defensive end/tight end Matt Delmas and receiver/defensive back Stuart Maxwell. Loyola coach Joe Jurus hopes his team can be competitive and win at least one home playoff game this season. The Hawks open the season Thursday with a 7 p.m. game against Blakelock in Burlington. Iroquois Ridge After finishing as runners-up in Tier 3 the past two seasons, the Iroquois Ridge Trailblazers hope this is the year they finally lift a championship trophy. Quarterback Mike Malo, a Grade 12 student, is expected to backbone the team with his scrambling abili- ties and strong arm. Ridges offen- sive and defensive lines will be anchored by Grade 11 student Andrew Ziebart. The Trailblazers, senior T3 final- ists two years ago and junior final- ists in 2010, will feature a spread formation on offence.
