This measure will reimburse employers for 20% of the salary paid to new hires for one year, up to $5,000 per worker. Our tax credit will support new jobs not just a replacement of a previous employee. Employers will also have to show they are providing on-the- job training. To make it fair, we will cap the amount an individual employer could claim at $100,000 a year so other companies have access to the fund as well. Nik Spohr NDP Continued from page 10 Highway and rapid transit improvements are helpful for businesses who want to call Halton home. We are uniquely positioned in the GTA between Toronto and the US border, near to Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph, meaning that our plan to integrate highway improvements with rapid transit will have a huge local impact. Likewise the PC plan to increase post-sec- ondary student places will have a dramatic impact on jobs in Halton through the likelihood of an expansion to Sheridan College and the expected creation of a satellite campus of Wilfrid Laurier University that will bring jobs and growth. This type of diversification of our economy helps its strength by spreading out the jobs across a number of different economic sectors and lessening the chance of a devastating local downturn. Ted Chudleigh Progressive Continued from page 10 small. Thats why were working with business- es to reduce their taxes and increase their com- petitiveness. When our tax package is fully implemented, the tax rate on new investment for small busi- nesses will be reduced by 55 per cent. Because we know that 70 per cent of new jobs will require a post-secondary education, we are investing in 60,000 new post-secondary spaces, providing a 30 per cent tuition grant to low- and middle-income families and, to give prospective students greater choice, we will build three new satellite campuses in three new communities. Halton is being considered as the home for one of these campuses, and I believe that an investment of this kind would be of great benefit to the local economy. Indira Naidoo-Harris Liberals Continued from page 10 and local food processors. Mix all this together, all at the same time, by dedicated citizens who are in it for the long haul, and there is no doubt that the economy will turn around and be there for the next generation. Vote Green on Election day and you will be voting for a stronger Canada run by stronger, more transparent leaders you can be proud of.
