began researching it when his cousin was diagnosed. "We were all devastated, but he has been a great inspiration. He is surpris- ingly upbeat. I think his biggest inspiration is his desire to see his children grow up," he said. That is why Liptay's family golf course, Indian Wells, in north Burlington, is donated to the ALS Ontario's Tee Off 4 ALS annual event. Leslie Liptay, Steve's cousin, knows how impor- tant this is to build aware- ness in the local commu- nity and appreciates her family's support. "Before my husband Bob was diagnosed with ALS, neither of us was aware of the disease and over the years, we've encountered many people who also had never heard of it," said Leslie. "Events of this kind help bring a much needed awareness of ALS to the community. My uncle has always been supportive of Bob and very generous in making this fundraiser the success that it is." ALS Ontario provides equipment and support for those living with ALS in Ontario. This year's goal is $75,000 The event will be emceed by Jack Armstrong, sports- caster and Toronto Raptors announcer, along with Bryan Crawford, Toronto Argonauts footballer. Robertson, who has been living with ALS, a paralyzing neuromuscu- lar disease, for the past seven years (already outliving the two-to-five-year lifespan given to most ALS patients), will once again participate in the local Tee Off 4 ALS hosted at Indian Wells Tim Robertson Golf Course on Sept. 20. "I continue to participate in the Tee Off for ALS because I can," he said. "One of facts about ALS is that all patients progress through the disease at various rates. I've known patients who have passed away within months of diagnosis. Fortunately, I have pro- gressed slowly. I am able to attend events like the Tee Off and speak about my experience, hopefully raising awareness of the disease while I still can. By raising awareness and funds at events such as this we will one day find a cause and ultimately a cure." Indian Wells Golf Course owner Steve Liptay knows how vital community support is when loved ones live with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, as his family has lived with the effects of the disease and gives back to the local community in hopes of helping raise awareness. Several years ago, the Liptay family was shocked when a family member was diagnosed with ALS, a paralyzing and fatal neurodegenera- tive disease, at the age of 42. "At the time of diagnosis, he had two small children, both under the age of two," said Liptay, who hadn't heard about ALS, but immediately
