These words that get thrown around when crises hap- pen and when you turn inward. What were trying to say is we need to turn to each other in time of crisis. The Interfaith Council is comprised of leaders from Haltons diverse faith communities, who gather to dialogue and build mutually supportive relationships based on understanding. It formed in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, started by A. Q. Mufti of the Al-Falah Islamic Center and the Reverend Dr. Morar Murray- Hayes of the Maple Grove United Church and later joined by Rabbi Paul Sidlofski of the Shaarei- Beth El Congregation, Wises predecessor. Wise said some good has come out of the hor- ror of Sept. 11 with the forming of the Interfaith Council. (They) got together and said can we work together and plan some kind of prayer service. Out of that came the Interfaith Council, an ongo- ing group dedicated to interfaith work in our town, Wise said. Murray-Hayes said one reason to hold the ceremony is for the Interfaith Council to cele- brate its 10-year journey, of striving to bring understanding and respect for other religions. Its an opportunity for us to raise up the hope and faith and life that has continued, she added. Despite this dark moment in history, there are f some things that we can celebrate and one o them is the sacrifice of those who choose to pro- tect us: the emergency services who are all going to be represented and involved in the commemo- ration. The council has grown to include nine faiths, including the Buddhist faith, Sikhs, Hindus, Zoroastrians and Bahais. Murray-Hayes invites everyone to come out to the ceremony. This is an opportunity for Oakville residents to show respect for those who died, to remember and also to be part of a collective hoping to con- tinue to walk forward in peace and hope, she said.
