On Saturday, Sept. 17 residents are wel- come to pick up some of the 1,000-plus tons of compost available at Haltons waste management site (HWMS) on Regional Road 25. Residents must bring their own bags or containers (maximum seven garbage bags per household) and a shovel in order to bag their own compost. To ensure a healthy garden, a blend of 60 per cent topsoil and 40 per cent compost should be used. The compost giveaway is between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Special waste drop-off days will take place Sept. 24 at the Burlington Closed Landfill and on Oct. 22 at Mohawk Raceway. Both events take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Acceptable items for drop-off include pesticides, paint, motor oil, antifreeze, pro- pane tanks, computers, stereos, TVs, DVD fplayers and VCRs.
