Now children from across Oakville can participate, benefitting from world-class teaching and experiencing the thrill of per- forming before a live audience. In this inaugural year, weekly classes will focus on vocal training, creative movement and repertory theatre. It all culminates in a year-end Musical Showcase that will feature excerpts from much-loved musicals and highlight the individual talents of the per- formers. Students will enjoy learning with instructors schooled in the performing arts in an encouraging and friendly setting. The goal of the team at SpotLight Musical Company is to provide each student with a unique experience that will nurture his or her lifelong passion for the performing arts. The creative team behind SpotLight Musical Company comprises versatile per- formers and experienced teachers. Artistic Director Joanne Chow is a talented performer and choreographer who graduated from The Julliard School and holds a Master's degree in Arts from New York University. She per- formed and toured with several distinguished professional dance companies for more than a decade and received grants from the New York Community Trust to support her cre- ative work. Joanne has almost 30 years' expe- rience teaching dance students from pre- schoolers to dance majors at universities. She has provided numerous workshops to sup- port the dance and drama curriculum in both Halton and Peel Region schools. Vocal director Bruce Murray is an accom- plished musician from a talented musical family from Springhill, Nova Scotia. Educated fat St. Xavier's University and the University o British Columbia, he spent more than a decade as a television and recording artist, producing four albums and performing on more than 300 television programs. In addi- tion, Bruce has been a beloved teacher in Halton Region for many years and has direct- ed more than 19 school musicals. Classes will be divided into junior and senior Ensembles and held at Munn's United Church on Tuesday nights from fall 2011 through spring 2012. Extracurricular activities can lead to improved test scores and better behavior in the classroom.
