With 12 LHIN-funded agencies serving those with mental health or addiction problems in Halton and Mississauga, theres a repetition in services and time wasted navigating through a complex system, according to Bill McLeod, local LHIN CEO. What we found was a very fragmented system, McLeod told Halton Regions health and social ser- vices committee during a meeting Tuesday. Theres no single player that sees it as their job to design and f plan mental health services. Its made up of lots o players finding their right niche. This past June, the Mississauga Halton (MH) LHIN gathered with local service providers to discuss inte- grating services. McLeod said the MH LHIN would like to see the existing 12 mental health agencies come together and for a leader to emerge to facilitate the integration. He said better integration reduces or eliminates the need for separate referral for each service, which takes significant time and effort. He said it also elimi- nates bad competition, with agencies competing for the same dollars for overlapping services. In his presentation, McLeod said amalgamating services would re-route between $2.5 and $3 million from administration fees to front-line services to decrease wait times. The other thing with wait times is theres a mis- match with some services having a high wait time and others a low wait time. No one is trying to balance that, added McLeod. The LHIN would provide one-time funding and staff to help with the service integration. While the MS LHIN cant order the 12 service pro- viders which include ADAPT Halton and Oakvilles Grace House Group Home to amalgamate, McLeod said the Province does have that authority. Some (agencies) are quite concerned that their philosophies will get lost in a larger agency, others are willing to take the lead and say this is something thats needed to happen for a long time. Community mental health and addic- tion services account for $31 million of MH LHIN funding. A staff report on the integration initia- tive will be presented to regional council later this fall. Local LHIN wants to streamline mental health services The annual A Taste of Downtown event is throwing in a bit of a mash-up this year where local chefs will have to compete. The first annual Culinary Mash-Up will take place on Saturday, Sept. 10 in the Towne Square from noon to 4 p.m. Six area executive chefs will be thrown into a Black Box competition, which means each team will use ingredients given to them in a box only moments before cooking begins. They will be tasked to turn the ingredients into quality dishes within a time limit. Furthermore, each chef will be paired with another restaurant for the first time. Spectators will be able to watch the action live. The contest also celebrates all things homegrown. The Black Box items will contain 100 Mile ingredients. Area celebrity chef and restaurateur Massimo Capra will lead the afternoons festivities. There will also be a beer, wine and food-tasting pavilion. A Taste of Downtown will begin the following week- end, running from Sept. 16-30. Local chefs compete y pin Culinar Mash-U
