You can water any of your plants quite easily from the pond. The pond refills itself every time it rains, said Poland. The idea is to keep as much water that falls here on the property rather than going all into the sewer system and overflowing the lines. The front also has a pond a flood pond where rainstorm water fills it up to the top and then seeps back into the ground and holds water for trees and plants, said Poland. There are also several fruit and nut trees, along with a Kentucky coffee tree to make their own coffee on site. They even have medicinal plants Echinacea and jewelweed, which is good for mosquito bites, Poland said. Poland plans to build a greenhouse on the back of the house with reclaimed windows, so he can start his seedlings in March and will be ready to go into the ground when the frost is over, he said. Im going to be growing stuff in the green- house year-round because I can crack the win- dow open a bit in the rec room and use the geo- thermal heating to heat the greenhouse and they're all gas-filled and insulated windows, said Poland. Poland didnt disclose how much everything cost, but did say, It does add up. The property was a recent winner of the Halton Climate Champions contest, and he has received grants from Transition Oakville and the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The latter is for a garden-sharing program to pair people with gardens up with people in apartments or condo- miniums who dont have a garden. Everyday, we enjoy it and take a little walk out and see how things are doing, but also its a different way of doing social change, said Poland. Were just trying to lead by example and our main thing is we wanted to show what is possible to do with a typical 1950s bungalow in subur- bia.
