Nicholson and Vincent- Lapointe, meanwhile, won their second C-2 500m gold in as many years. This was technically the duos first world championship, however, since last years victory came in a demonstration race. The pair clocked a time of 2:01.028, more than two seconds faster than Anastasia Ganina and Natalia Marasanova of Russia (2:03.440). It is definitely the most important and memorable race of my career, Nicholson said Saturday after receiving her medal and hearing O Canada played in their honour. Nicholson and Vincent- Lapointe had never raced in front of such a large and noisy crowd, which hampered their commu- nication throughout the race. I was pretty much freaking out at the end of the race and ppIm su osed to be the stable person at the back of the boat, Nicholson said. Our finish wasnt quite as solid because of the anxiety. Vincent-Lapointe earned Canadas third gold medal of the meet the following day, winning the C-1 200m event. Burloaks Mark Oldershaw was fifth in the C-1 5,000m, while van Koeverden was fifth in the K-1 5,000m. Hell have to wait a little longer to over- throw Whitfield as the national triathlon champion. Whitfield won his 10th consecutive Canadian title last weekend, finishing 24 seconds ahead of Jones at the national champi- onships in Kelowna, B.C. Whitfield crossed the line in 1:54:12 while Jones settled for silver with a clocking of 1:54.36. The swim and bike went as planned, but I got on the run and didnt have the legs, said Jones, a 26-year-old Q.E. Park grad. Im thankful for the sup- port and cheering from the Kelowna people because I was definitely hurting on the second half of that run. It is not the performance I want- ed to have. It would have been nice to get my first Canadian title. Earlier this year, Jones became the first Canadian to finish ahead of Whitfield in a World Cup race since 2001. Jones finished in front of the 37-year-old Whitfield at both a World Cup race and a World Championship Series event leading up to the national cham- pionships. It is nice to get one on Jones because he has been bloody strong this year, Whitfield said. We had some fun banter throughout the week. We have become like broth- ers. Every workout we are side by side, so we know how much it will hurt to win. While Jones fell short in his attempt to unseat the longtime Canadian mens champion, the womens race featured a major upset. Sarah-Anne Brault, 21, beat out Paula Findlay the third-ranked female triathlete in the world by nearly a minute. Nicholson, partner win second straight title Tess Kruspe helped Canada complete a golden sweep in junior competition at the U.A.N.A. Pan American Synchronized Swimming Championships last weekend in Montreal. The national junior squad racked up 77.227 points to win the team event, finish- ing ahead of the U.S. (74.278) and Brazil (73.770). Kruspe was joined on the squad by three Calgary residents, two Quebec athletes and two other swimmers from Ontario. "We had a very short time together (two months) to put together this routine, but we pulled it off," said Claudia Holzner, cap- tain of the Canadian team. "Each time out, we improved upon the patterns while the energy and endurance were always there. The last routine of a season with a national team is always emotional. Now we go back to our clubs for the winter." Canada finished first in the nations standings in junior competition, followed by Brazil and Mexico. Canada was third in the 13-15 age group, while Synchro Ontario was third in the 12-and-under grouping.
