Police said the suspects, who operate primar- ily in Oakville and Burlington, have targeted at least six different seniors since Aug. 6. As part of the scam, the couple approaches seniors at grocery and retail stores and asks them to point out directions to a hospital on a map. The map is placed over the victims wallet or purse allowing the thieves to steal from the vic- tim unobserved. Unfortunately, this is another variation of a crime targeting our elderly population under the guise of someone in distress and asking the senior for help in this case, needing directions to the hospital, said Constable Wendy Moraghan, Halton Police Elder Services Co-ordinator. Seniors can help police by being extremely cautious when approached by a stranger asking for assistance. Direct them to a store clerk instead, and ensure your personal property is protected and in your sight at all times. Moraghan also said the suspects target seniors who are shopping alone and have approached victims both inside the store loca- tions and outside in the stores parking lot, just prior to the victim departing. The female suspect is described as white, in her mid-30s to 40s, with a slim build, between 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-8 in height with long dark hair and a European accent. The male suspect is described as white, in his mid-30s to 40s, around 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8 in height with dark hair and a European accent. The Halton Regional Police Service Fraud Unit is investigating these incidents and is seek- ing the publics assistance in identifying the con artists. Anyone who believes they may have been victimized by this scam, or has any information related to this investigation, is asked to contact Detective Brad Murray at 905-825-4747, ext. 8982 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). fBeware o strangers bearing maps warn police Seniors can help police by being extremely cautious when approached by a stranger asking for assistance.
