the HERALD Council Briefs Wednesday lebruary 19 Library closure threatened due to budget restrictions Either the Georgetown or Acton library may have to be closed if the Halton Hills Library Board doesn t receive financial help board Vtce- Chairperson Nancy Brown warned town councillors Ms Brown Andison and board Chairperson Jay Jackson told the board needs help to cover it pay equity costs otherwise a branch may have to be closed Mr Jackson pointed out the board has already paid out towards salaries because of the province pay equity legislation And it is required to pay out another over the next two years he said Both board representatnes stressed the library budget only represents sev per cent of the town s total operating budget vet the board s pay equity costs represent per cent of the town s total pay equity expenditures Hardly an equitable situation said Ms Brown The two requested some of the library board s pay equity costs be absorbed bv other town depart Ms Brown pointed out the board has already cut the equivalent of five full time staff members and centralized services as cost cutting measures Although sympathetic to the board s predicament council mem hers refrained from making any promises In the end they decided to refer the matter to town budget com to review the request Final attempt Squadron 756 Air Cadets in Georgetown made a final attempt Monday to obtain a grant from town councillors The town s budget committee which is comprised of town council recommended earlier this month the request along with several other grant requests be rejected Squadron Cpt Greg Siekierko told councillors the money would be used to take the cadets on special field tnps He told councillors the cadets have a long history of helping to prepare young adults to go on to successful careers during adulthood Acton councillor Gerald Rennie said budget committee rejected the request because similar groups don receive grant money Rennie pointed out local scout groups have similar aims as the air cadets yet they don receive grant money Councillors decided to refer the matter back to budget committee Agreement recom mended Town general committee recom mended Monday the town enter into a condominium agreement with Torontobased Law Development Group in connection with the Kingsmill development on River Drive Georgetown Committee members only made the recommendation after town staff assurred them the developer had provided sufficient to protect the town against the work going unfinished The would allow the town to finish the work if the developer abandoned the project However town Administrative Assistant Stephen Thomson said the developer has been very cooperative with the town and the project is on schedule The recommendation will go to specific basis Appeal filed At the urging of town councillor Gail Rutherford general com mittee recommended Monday staff appeal a town committee of ad justment decision to the Ontario Municipal Board The decision involves Law Development being permitted as part of its development on River to install balconies within a certain distance of an en sensitive area Committee members agreed the appeal would be withdrawn if the Credit Valley Conservation Authority doesn have any problem with the location The recommendation will go before council for final approval this Monday Artcast completes commission the Georgetown bronze and aluminum casting companv located at Armstrong Ave has just completed a monumental task An eight foot pound statue commissioned by the Atlantic efs and Petty Officers Association was recently completed b one of the few com pames in the world that do this specialized work We are unique because there aren t manv companies that do this tvpe of work said owner Knoespel The statue called The Sailor was a special project for Artcast Our clients are usually artists But this case the particular association heard about our work through word of mouth said Knoespel The statue will be shipped to Halifax where it will be unveiled this in memory and to com memorate all sailors who served in the Canadian Navy The cost of the casting not in eluding the
