approached Arts Alive with the award concept to help celebrate its Anniversary Arts Alive agreed that recogni tion for the arts was both needed and desired Nominations were solicited in the following areas The Ralph Award for volunteerism in the arts com munity The Kenneth Award for working with youth in the arts and Arts Alive Awards for visual arts and performing arts A committee formed of Arts Alive members and represen in the community chosen by the Herald met last Tuesday to discuss the nominations The winners are Ralph Ursel Award John Sommer Kenneth R Har Award Paul Arts Alive Award for Performing Arts Ron Hunt Arts Alive Award for Visual Arts Frank and Fran An thony The Arts Acmevement Awards will be given to worthy recipients every five years The 1991 awards will be presented Oct 18 at a reception hosted by the Herald Each winner will be given a take home award signifying their achievement A plaque will be placed in the Cultural Centre foyer on permanent display to honor the winners for their con tribution to the community Cultural Centre 1 0 years young One of the events that will mark the 10th anniversary of the Hills Cultural Centre in Georgetown is an art exhibition at the Gallery of the Cultural The original idea for this ex hibition was to contact all the ar lists who had soloexhibitions at the Centre since the fall of 1981 and to select one art work from each of them Some of the artists had moved and could not be found Instead several artists who had two- or three person- shows were contacted to round out the exhibition The end result is an exciting selection of 36 art works by the following artists Robert Less Batten Carole Black Frank C Black Boulanger Charlotte Shirley Wendy Buykes Thorn James Colhs JR Colter Ken Cretchen Hamilton Day Ambles invites everybody to come to this open ing on October to meet the tists and to enjoy their creations Fire calls Busy weekend Halton Hills firefighters respon to six calls this past weekend starting with a motor vehicle cident on King St in Georgetown Friday afternoon Firefighters were called to wash down a gasoline leak at the accident scene An hour later at 5 m firefighters responded to an alarm activation at the Durham St seniors home in Georgetown When they arrived they discovered the alarm had been set off by burnt toast At 50 the same night firefighters were called to the scene of a motor vehicle accident on Cone 9 in Hills but when they arrived the victims had already escaped the vehicles and firefighters assistance was not required On Saturday firefighters began the day responding to an alarm ac tivation at the Hyde Park seniors residence where the alarm had been set off by burnt eggs That evening at 10 firefighters kept people a safe distance from fallen hydro lines til Halton Hills Hydro arrived to fix the lines The lines had fallen after the hydro post was struck by a motor vehicle Their last call came on Sunday at 3 30 Jo a grass fire on Lot 1 Cone ffui Hills
