HERALD Wednesday September Arts and ideas PagellB Stratford trip highlighted by excellent company My wife and I registered for a bus lour from Georgetown to Stratford recently to attend a matinee performance of the musical Carousel in the Festival Theatre This is probably the greatest of all the musicals by the celbrated team of Richard Rodgers com poser and Oscar Hammerstein lyricist who collaborated on nine different musicals between and Carousel is the story of the handsome but shorttempered and unreliable carnival barker Billy Bigelow and Julie Jordan a romanticallyminded working girl who has the misfortune to fall in love with him Billy is happiest in the com pany of other men With women he feels uneasy Yet he is a skirt chaser he cant resist them The power women have over him in furiates him and he turns violent at the slightest provocation Julie Jordan is the kind of woman who loves only once and having mar ried Billy she traded herself short moments of bliss and hap piness balanced rather unevenly with long stretches of heartbreak and misery The owner of the carnival a tempestuous woman who employs Billy because he is her lover fires him when she finds out that he is making love to Julie The mercurial Billy is unable to find work in the small fishing village in Maine where the story takes place with the result he goes from bad to worse turning into an Impossible hus band When Julie gets pregnant he plans a robbery to get at some money and when the robbery fails he kills himself At this point the musical turns from stark realism to fantasy Billy arrives in the nether world but is not ac cepted He is given the chance to redeem himself and sent back to earthforaday His daughter has grown into a troubled 15yearold Somehow Billys presence at her gradua tion from school only sensed by the daughter and her mother an older and wiser Julie still in love with her long dead husband end the musical on an upbeat note Stratford has given this 46- yearold musical a truly wonder ful production The sets and costumes are as splendid as only Stratford can make them MacDonald is the director The many energetic dances use the original choreography by the great American choreographer Agnes Mill All the players and singers are superb Billy in particular as played and sung by John Devor- ski could not have been better And what spectacular songs the cast is given to sing If I Loved You June Is Bustln Out All Over Blow High Blow Low A Real Nice Clambake Whats The use of and Youll Never Walk Alone All of these classics are rightly beloved in the whole world Carousel is gutsy stuff the sexual force in the material is quite extraordinary and the sum of it all is popular art at its most inspired and lively Carousel will be performed 25 more times between now and lis Ideas and The Arts by John November If you call Stratford at the box office will tell you on what days these per formances take place I assure you that Carousel will not let you down The bus ride to and from Strat ford was very enjoyable Far away from Toronto the Ontario countryside is still lovely and the fine looking farms and welltilled fields are happy reminders that not all our good farmland has vanished under tar and socalled developments of one kind or another Mostly women had decided to go to Stratford one of our greatest cultural shrines in Canada on that beautiful Satur day in August From about 30 people only three were men I never get used to the fact that in Canada culture is the business of women Most Canadian men are ashamed to be found in a theatre or gallery or library and only go there if their women drag them there by force Isnt that a clear indication that women are the Artisans offer weaving course course for beginners on Wednes day
