Wednesday September 11 1991 Sports Page 1J Playing time for youths shortened with the times When I was a young lad much younger than today it was com mon for youngsters to play three and four games in a day for ferent teams and do one gave any thought to whether it was good for the health and well being or nut I began early with the school team then the local boys club and later the youth team that was it for me Not that I was any good just enthusiastic about the game oh yes and the odd and spectating at the senior level Weekend was a busy time and no different from to day except the activity is more administrative than active I sometimes wonder if all this activity was harmful or not who can the sight of me attempting to charge around as a player and official stinking of liniment and covered 10 swathes of bandaging got quite a kick at that sight Weak ankles bad knees bad back and now an arthritic hip caused by years of sporting involvement Is the result Today players are limited to a certain amount of play in one day in any kind of tournament play be It cup league or playoff Under 108 are to play not more than minutes per day This was introduced a few years ago following some concerns as to the health well being of the kids spending a lot of time on the fields in extreme heat not to mention the possibility of playing through injuries How damaging can It be I know that if I had not been playing five hour soccer games or three games in one day I would have been at something else When you are young you can do anything or so it seemed at the time Ontario Cup Finals were held Saturday and Sunday at the ex cellent complex Burlington Some excellent soccer was on display particularly from the very younger players Twelve and thirteen year olds are only in in the ball and playing the game and it was a delight to see players ignore the frantic calls from the sidelines No mat ter the odd erring call by the of ficials the players got on with the game and well they did play Alex Tough I actually heard one coach of an eleven year old boys team exhort his charges to kick the shins knee in the thigh elbow in the back and follow through with high tackles and pushes Is this the way to teach youngsters the game of soccer or any other game Sounds like win at any cost to me and it not my way I also heard another coach of six teen year olds to play soccer with your feet and not attack the opposing players play football Say football play football This my way Due to the Ontario Cup duties as a member of the OSA Board it was not possible for me to attend the soccer clubs Saturday func tion for the end of season play and I trust It went well I have seen a little more around town this season than I have in past seasons and there is a lot of en thusiasm on show I understand there may be a return to com petitive soccer in the lower age groups next season and this is welcome news Frankly there is a need for both the competitive and recreational aspects of the game to blend together Ideally one acts as a feeder to the other and the success of one leads to the success of the other The club finals take place this coming weekend as also the last of the Ontario Cup finals and the ladles league Toe ladles finish at the Bolton complex another im pressive site Mariners lead their playoff group with United second and Marlin and Winchester following Merseyside
