of nature We can keep it that way by taking extra care in handling ana disposing of hazardous pro ducts include barbeque starter wood preservatives and wood scraps treated with preser pesticides oilbased paint varnishes thinners turpentine gasoline lamp oil a variety of cleansers and even mothballs Many of these products are toxic and flammable Before you buy them consider safer alter natives Non toxic paints finish and cleansers for example Buy only the amount you neea to do the job Always leave a hazardous product in its original container and store carefully following the instructions on the label Even better give leftovers to a friend or neighbour who can use them Whatever you do dont try to dispose of hazardous wastes yourself Be especially cautious about what you pour down the drain if your cottage is connected to a septic tank Some substances can kill the organisms the sep tic tank that break down organic waste Some certain toxic solvents for example pass through the system unchanged and are discharged directly into the soil If toxics get into the groundwater they could con local wells and may eventually end up in the nearest lake or river The best thing to do with hazardous wastes is to take them to a special collection centre or depot Several Ontario cities have set up permanent depots Smaller communities are getting into the act by holding household hazardous waste collection days funded in part by grants from the provincial environment ministry Some of the wastes collected at the depots are recycled and the rest are shipped to a facility for
