Page Anniversary Edition Wednesday June 1M1 Georgetown hospital a community effort For the past 30 years Georgetown Hospital has been very much a part of the Hills community Its almost im possible to think what life would be like without the hospital For many people however it seem so long ago that a trip to the hospital meant a drive of 20 or 30 kilometers 15 to 20 miles those days to Brampton orGuelph Jack Gunn clearly remembers those days He was Georgetown Hospital s first Chairman of the Board and in a recent interview from his Ontario home offered these thoughts on life before Georgetown Hospital Wbat was the driving force behind the creation of Georgetown Hospital Gunn In the early 1950s the towns and around Toronto were growing rapidly In fact in Georgetown our population had increased by per cent in just five years Yet the nearest hospital was located in Brampton and Guelph Like Georgetown these areas too were expanding and their hospitals were desperately trying to keep pace with the growth By the mid it became ob vious to many of us in the com munity that a hospital in our area was the answer So in 1954 the Georgetown Chamber of Com merce began looking at ways to encourage development in the town It was determined that one to attract interest would be with the establishment of a local What role did the Chamber play In 1954 the Chamber of Commerce established an open public forum where a number of representatives from the newly established Hospital were invited to discuss their own experiences in building a hospuital irj their community What was the outcome of the forum Gunn A committee in Georgetown was then formed that included a number of local people As well there was con involvement by the community through fund raising activities by local service clubs charitable organizations and church groups When was the decision final made to proceed with the Hospital Gunn In addition to the monies raised by the community we received a bed grant from County We also presented a detailed proposal to the provincial government outlln big the reasons why a hospital was needed in our area By the government granted us our charter and gave the did work begin Gunn Construction began in and was completed by June 1961 It was an exciting time and I truly believe that the dedication and commitment of countless people were the key factors in the establishment of Georgetown Hospital It really was a com effort hair man of the Board MAY63 Mr John was instrumental In efforts leading to the construction of Georgetown and District Memorial Hospital submitted Healthy future is planned While the focus of this special supplement has been a historical look at Georgetown and District Memorial Hospital the attention is now turned to the Hospitals future and its role in Halton Hills in the 1990s To develop the Hospital s long ranee forecast a five year strategic planning process has been the route taken As part of the process a wide range of challenges are being examined such as demographics popula tion economics quality of ser vice and alliances with a variety of community services According to John Oliver Ex Director Georgetown Hospital This planning process is vital as Canada s health care industry continues to shift its focus to a consumeroriented system It is essential that Georgetown Hospital strategic plan reviews how best to allocate its resources to meet the needs of consumers today and tomorrow This detailed look at the Hospital direction for the future also involved defining what we are as a primary care facility and ensuring that we continue to deliver the best possible health care in the most modern way Completion of this plan is ex There are also other exciting programs in the works aimed at better addressing the health and related social services of Halton Hills seniors Provisions for a new 57 bed nursing home have been make and within the next few months a senior citizens ad visory committee will be established to study Georgetown Hospital s outpatient programs outside community services and Housing requirements committee will include members from the seniors com munity in both Georgetown and Acton As well there will be members of the Board of Direc tors of Georgetown Hospital representatives from municipal and regional government Sub sidized Housing Home Care Community and Social Support Committee Public Health and General Practitioners Providing topquality patient services is Georgetown Hospitals primary goal and is a commitment that began when the Hospital first opened its doors in It is a philosophy that will remain equally as strong in the coming years Come join the staff at Georgetown and District Memorial Hospital as it celebrates its past present and future Hospitals mission The mission of Georgetown and District Memo rial Hospital As a primary care facility it is the mission of Georgetown and District Memorial Hospital to provide primary acute care long term care and residential services to the residents of Hills As a primary health care pro vider the Hospital is also com mitted to the systematic tification of the health care needs of the community and the development of coordinated pro grams to meet identified needs in cooperation with other health care agencies In translating this lengthy statement into more simplified terms it is the belief of staff
