system that would loop around Georgetown and Acton to connect the Town with the Regions southern municipalities The bus system would be linked by Highway 25 Highway and Trafalgar Road Regional Plann ing Staff told General Commit tee General Committee is com prised of Town councillors Staff couldnt give a time frame when the transit system would be implemented only say ing the study considers the Regions transportation needs 40 years into the future Halton Planner Ho Wong told General Committee an en vironmentally friendly transit system requires the creation of bus routes and therefore higher density communities to support the routes A public transporta tion system only works if people can walk to their local bus stop he said He reassured Committee the study doesnt call for overall den sity increases within Region He predicts instead that existing population densities will either increase or decrease through relocation Mobile home request An application requesting a permit to a mobile home permanently on a piece of proper ty on Sideroad 17 was deferred by Town General Committee Mon day The applicants representative Dan told General Com mittee the permit for a perma nent mobile home is necessary because the applicant will only be able to build a house on the pro perty in nine years time It will take nine years before the appli cant will be able to afford to build a house on the property he said Committee members were wary of granting a permanent permit for a mobile home because it contradicts Town policy Normal practice is for the Town to issue threeyear tem porary permits for mobile homes proposed for a rural area If the permanent permit was granted tnen committee members agreed similar re quests could be made Committee directed staff to Town policy on the mobile home issue and submit a report for committees con- Retaining wall meeting Hills General Commit tee directed Town staff Monday to meet with Georgetown Market Street resident Phil Coles to reach an agreement in which Mr Coles would be able to build a re taining wall on a piece of Town property Committee members had no problem with the wall being built as long as Mr Coles agreed to take down the wall if the Town ever required the land at a future date invitation Protect Our Water En vironmental Resources POWER representative Doug Young appeared before General Committee Monday inviting all members to a public information meeting on water scheduled for tomorrow Thursday at Holy Cross School in Georgetown star ting at 8 pm Mr Young said Halton Hills Mayor Russ Miller and Halton Regional Chairman Pete have already agreed to attend the meeting The meeting will focus on the effect the Acton dump if approv ed would have on Acton and Georgetowns water supply Mr Young expressed disap pointment POWER had yet to hear from any provincial officials invited to the meeting Its obvious we are going to have to rely on ourselves to stop the dump said Mr Young Subdivision plan deferred In response to a request by local environmentalist John Minns Town General Committee decided Monday to defer a staff recommendation that a estate plan subdivision on the Ninth Line abutting Gten Williams be approved The recommendation will go before Council this Monday for final approval Mr Minns argued some of the neighboring residents had not been given sufficient time to review the staff report on the development proposal Parking meter hikes Halton Hills General Commit tee recommended Monday the parking meter rates tor downtown Georgetown be in creased from 25 cents to 50 cents and the time limits be increased from one to two hours The recommendation will go before Council this Monday for final approval wants money Staff was directed Monday by Town General Committee to determine if the Town should donate to local En vironmental group Protect Our Water Environmental Resources POWER to help finance the groups legal fees in its fight for Amendment Amendment is being propos ed by the Niagara Escarpment Commission and If approved would ban landfills from the escarpment The amendment is currently before a hearing to determine its legitimacy and POWER has hired legal representation to defend the amendment POWERS legal fees should total approximately 30000 com mittee members were told New Town Clerk Committee members learned Monday the Town has hired a new Clerk to replace wellknown DeputyClerk French The new Clerk is Jan Stewart and she takes over the position July 22 Ms Stewart comes from Burl ington where she worked for several years
