THE HERALD Wednesday May 15 Page IB Agriculture Dairy industry introduces new marketing policy A new Ontario Milk Marketing Board policy will in crease the industrys market responsiveness and its ability to supply more milk to processors in the fall months when consumer demands are high The dairy- industry has con tinued to experience a twoyear cycle that often resulted in lower milk production in the fall period of one year followed by higher milk production in the next year The difference between high and low fall production was less than five per cent but further finetuning has become desirable This longterm seasonality policy will be in place for the 199192 dairy year which begins August 1 It replaces a temporary program in place for the current year The policy affects the producers located in Southern Ontario The producers in University of Guelph equine clinic one of a kind Since almost critically ill newborn foals have been treated in an intensivecare unit at the University of Guelphs On tario Veterinary College The unit the only one of its kind in Ontario treats about foals each year with a success rate of per cent Since its inception it has provided 24hour intensive care to suffering infection prematurity and other birth com plications A number of the foals have gone on to become racehorses and all have demonstrated nor mal socialization after treat ment says veterinarian Sherrill Green coordinator of the unit We are now at the point where we are able to look at the outcome of cases that have survived she says Neonatology is a relatively new field in equine medicine that has similarities to human medicine OVC is in the process of establishing a liaison with McMaster University in Hamilton to exchange ideas on the treatment of babies and foals The foal and the human baby share a lot of the same medical problems especially neurological and respiratory pro blems says Green Equine neonatology is now at the stage of collecting specific data on the foal The OVC intensivecare unit recently com pleted a trial of Amikacin the primary antibiotic used to treat critically ill foals to learn about the kinetics of the drug Funded by the P Taylor Foundation the trial will provide valuable in formation for future treatment Green says Up until recently the unit had to extrapolate what we knew about human babies and the drug and try to apply it to the foal Depending on the diagnosis foals in the intensivecare unit receive antibiotics intravenous fluids mechanical ventilator treatment and nutritional sup plementation Veterinary staff and students use a team ap to care for the foals which average a six to sevenday stay in the unit Equine neonatal intensive care can be expensive the cost of such treatment may be equivalent to that for an adult horse that has had surgery for colic In the future the unit plans to perfect its team ap proach study fetal problems and undertake longterm followup studies The caseload at the unit is predominantly thoroughbred foals but the unit also sees Arabs Canadian sport horses and miniature horse foals It doesnt matter to us whether theyre milliondollar foals or not says Green They all get the availability of industrial milk us ed in a wide variety of dairy pro ducts such as butter cheese ice cream and others which relate to milk produced under market sharing quota The new policy will encourage producers to target for more con sistent production of industrial milk under by shipping fortyfive per cent or more of their annual MSQ in the first six months of the dairy year August through January subject to an per cent maintenance require ment Any production below the maintenance level would result in a temporary loss of the use of that amount of quota for the re mainder of the dairy year The producer would have use of the full amount of holdings at the start of the next dairy year MSQ milk production patterns show almost SO per cent is pro duced in the first six months of each year This policy is designed to try to ensure the per cent level will be reached consistently so that milk supply is matched with consumer demand NOW AT YOUR FORD MERCURY DEALERS WE GIVE YOU MORE
